In August, the Mobile Press Register ran a series of articles in a Sunday edition about Mobile's Monroe Park. This area of 200-300 acres is the largest remaining green space along Mobile Bay within the city limits. At one time it was one of the centers of social life within the city but fell into disuse in the 1940's.
Alabama State Docks now has clear title to nearly all of Monroe Park. The Docks plans on building a rail yard there to support a shipping container facility at nearby Choctaw Point. Details can be found at the State Docks website. Their plan also requires filling in substantial wetlands.
The Corps of Engineers has scheduled two "open-house public workshops" to present the Environment Impact Statements (EIS) for the planned container port terminal on the old Monroe Park site. The workshops will be at the Mobile Convention Center on Thursday, November 7, from 4 pm to 7 pm. One workshop will present the EIS for the Arlington and Garrows Bend Channels, and the other will present the EIS for Choctaw Point. The workshops will meet in Rooms 203A and 203B. "Project managers and key personnel for both EIS projecs will be present to answer questions from the general public," states the public notice.......
