This park was originally for African-Americans only. It's located on the south end of East Lenoir Street and Worth Street. It was built in 1937 by money provided from Federal funds. The park was dedicated on May 10, 1938. It's on a 40-acre plot of land with a swimming pool, football field, picnic area, merry-go-round, and a playground. African-American troops were quartered at the park during the fall and winter of 1941 and 1942. Chavis Park is the site near where John Chavis opened a school in 1807.
